Can’t Resist This Discussion: Week 2

I was invited by The Bohemian Housewife to join The Boho Book Club. Now, I absolutely love a great book so I was 100% in! The book we will be reading this month is Resist the Machine by C.D. Hoffman.

I was supposed to do a post about this from last week, but I have been dealing with some technical issues. Allow me to tell you what this book is about:

“Like all Avants, Clara Spinner’s genetic code, future occupation and date of death have been predetermined by the government. So when her innermost desires conflict with her rigidly planned life, she must hide them or risk losing everything.

Fresh out of the academy, she loathes her new assignment as a medical technician, but those who complain tend to disappear, so what can she do? Deciding to make the best of it, she works hard to become one of the top techs at the hospital, specializing in the use of memory retrieval equipment. As her skills gain recognition, she begins to make peace with the system until the day a loved one vanishes without a trace.

Seeking answers, Clara’s retrieves a memory nobody was supposed to see. Suspense with a touch of romance—Avant Nation will take you on a thought-provoking ride into the near future.

I know, it sounds totally fascinating! now follow along with me while I spoil it for you by answering these questions. If you read the book with me though, it won’t be as much of a spoiler.

Week Two: Do you think they will be able to complete their mission? What are your thoughts on the Avant Military?

While Clara strikes me as a non-discombobulated(It’s a word today!) person,I believe everyone has the power within them to do bad/evil things. I can for see her destroying a mind but it has to be in a certain circumstance. These decisions are often made when someone’s back is in a corner. The Avant Military reminds me of any other military. The objective of any militia is whatever they are told, so I don’t believe they have anyone’s best interests at heart. Unfortunately, everything they do is top secret so anything they say we can only take with a grain of salt because they are unreliable by occupation.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR —–

C.D. Verhoff spent her childhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She’s the fourth of five sisters. No brothers. Her background includes medical lab processor, elementary school teacher, and registered representative in insurance and finance. Back up a few years (okay, a lot of years), to her senior year of high school. She was working part-time in a legal office. On a slow week when the boss was on vacation, she started her first fantasy novel. The book was terrible, but an aspiring novelist was born. Unfortunately, getting published didn’t seem like a realistic goal, so she filed away the dream and worked toward degrees in business and education. Later, when she left the workforce to become a stay-at-home mom, the writing bug resurfaced. She recently returned to full-time employment as a preschool teacher, but the novels keep coming.

While growing up, Anne hid her own anxieties by hiding and reading book after book. She developed an addiction to first love, first kisses and her favorite: the happy-ever-after story. This is what she writes today. Now she’s a mom of two and happily married to her own first love. Anne works hard to juggle being a wife and parent while writing, but fails at cooking because she is still trying to read book, after book of love stories on the side.

Her interests include weird trivia, quotable quotes, education, Saint John Paul II, dogs, dragons, history, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Walking Dead, Person of Interest, The Middle, Mr. Robot, coffee and chocolate. She is currently working on book three of the Avant Nation series, Fear the Machine, and hopes to publish it before the Spring of 2018.
